Village Environment Community Gangkharka is the result of a chance meeting between a Sherpa named Dorjee Netup Sherpa and Mr. Richard Suthers in 1999. Dorjee was was born in the village of Gangkharka, in the Helambu region of Nepal. Until he was twelve, Dorjee spent his days working in the village looking over herds of yaks. There was no schooling for the family, and he and his older brothers were sent by their parents to study at Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu.

Mr. Struthers met Dorjee during his first visit from the United Kingdom to Nepal. He took a passionate interest in the conditions of Dorjee's village, and upon his return home, he invited Dorjee to tour the United Kingdom. There, Dorjee was able to give a series of lectures and presentations about Helambu and what can be done to improve the quality of life in those areas. This was the start of VEC's work towards the improvement of life of the Nepalis in both Gangkharka and the region as a whole and has since expanded into the construction of a new school with ambitions towards the future of health care in the valley as well.
